An Actor’s Guide to Marketing Your Career, Part 2 of 5
Hey everyone,
Alright. Back to showcases and workshops. There are all kinds of showcases, workshops, opportunities to get your work out there and seen, and it is important to do. So, as we talked about last week, the key is making sure that you do your due diligence, that you do your research and get good referrals.
This week we want to talk about casting director workshops. This is where you pay money to go to a weekend or several weekend experience, and it’s a casting director of some show.
Quite often the person that’s conducting the workshop really isn’t the lead casting director for the show. They’re the assistant or the assistants, but sometimes it literally is the casting director of that show, which is better.
But so many actors pay a lot of money in hopes to be seen. They’re basically paying money to be seen by this established casting director. And on the one hand, I get it. I did it. I did those. I think I did two, and I swore after the second one that I’d never do it again.
And I’m not saying they don’t have value. I just never found the ones that were worth it.
The real point I want to make is: it’s really back to the same thing as the showcases that we talked about. You want to do your research and get good value for your dollar. Because as I said, there’s this whole cottage industry of people giving seminars and talks and lectures and doing everything they can to get as many actors to sign up, and you really don’t get much for it.
And then there’s the other – casting directors who really, genuinely love what they do, they love helping actors, they’re not overcharging, it’s very fair and reasonable, and clearly, by all the response from reviews, Yelps, or just word of mouth, the buzz is extremely positive, so this theme continues.
You want to reach out to your artistic family, the community of support that you have in the industry and get referrals, from your agents, other people that you can reach out to, anyone that can help you get to the quality that rises above the rip off. So hopefully this information is going to not only help you save some money but start aligning yourself with people who can help your careers, and they can. So good luck and let me know how it goes.
