How to Take Control Over What You Can, Part 3 of 5

Hey everyone,
Alright. Part 3 of “Taking Control of What You Have Control Of.” This part is really an offshoot of last week’s, which was talking about the emotional aspect of being a dreamer, being an actor and going after it – being as solid and healthy about that. This week, it’s really simple: the importance of having a really vibrant and healthy community to be a part of. I don’t care if it’s a group of actors, an acting class or school, a church, a religious group, a body of friends who have nothing to do with this business whatsoever.
I’m talking about the importance of having a community of support who believe in you, who get you, who nourish you and lift you up instead of pull you down. I know this: the healthier you get as a human being, the more you rise up, and those that are not willing and ready for that same type of change, they are going to fall away. It is inevitable.
I look back at my wedding photo, almost 30 years ago. I think I had 8 groomsmen, and of those 8, only one of those guys is still a close friend of mine. On one hand, you could say that’s really sad and pathetic, and believe me, I’ve missed several of them over the years, but it was just part of it. As I kept marching forward with this, and that’s not to imply for a second that I’m better than, or anything like that, but it’s just the path that I took and the work that I’ve done on myself started to attract different people and started to shed other people and other relationships that were not conducive to where I wanted to go and the person I wanted to be.
So take a look around you at the highest caliber of people and how you feel when you’re around them. Try to spend more time around them. Then try to think of some relationships that are not so good, not so healthy, and how you feel around those. You have a choice there, at least in most cases, of where you’re going to put your time and energy and who you’re going to surround yourself with.
It’s really important as an actor and a dreamer to be buoyed up, to be around people who get you, so I want to be a huge advocate for that. It doesn’t matter where it comes from. Just find people who have the same level of desire to step into their brilliance. They’ll help you and you’ll help them.
