Kick Ass Auditioning Tips Part 3 of 5

Hi everyone,
So, we’ve been talking about the nerves. Now let’s talk about practicality, right? The nuts and bolts of walking into that room. Not only can they smell nerves and fear, but they can smell neediness.
So that’s why all this is so important – the confidence, the freedom. But let’s give you a couple do’s and don’ts right away, okay? When you walk into the room you want to be all business. You want to be personable, you want to be friendly and warm and open, but when I say all business, I mean that you don’t want to be taking your coat and bag off and pulling out this and pulling out that. Have everything ready. They’re busy and so you want to be as efficient as possible with the time in there.
And another no-no from the casting director’s side is don’t shake their hand. It’s nothing personal, but they’re seeing dozens if not hundreds of people in a day and it’s the last thing they want to do all day long as you can probably imagine. You’d feel the same way.
So you walk in, a complete pro. Depending on the part, there are some auditions for roles that are more dramatic. They’re more intense emotionally and require some grounding. Call it whatever you have been trained in, whatever terminology. We would call it preparation. So let’s say it is. It’s a dramatic audition. You can walk in and they may say, “Tell me a little about yourself,” because they might want to chat a bit. You can look them right in the eye and just say, “I’d love to, but would it be alright if we audition first and then talk afterwards?” And I’m telling you, there’s not a quality respected casting director who’s good at their job that wouldn’t say, “Of course,” because they understand what you’re auditioning for. You’re not coming across like some pretentious method actor, trust me, you’re coming across like a pro who’s ready to work.
Let’s just leave it at that for today. Let’s just call that the dramatic audition, as far as just entering into the room and that first impression that you’re making upon them.
