Do YOU have to move to a New York or Los Angeles to receive world class acting training

Last week’s blog was entitled, “What do you do when you’ve outgrown the acting market that live in?” It spoke about when to move on to better training, more work opportunities, and the next phase of your career.
The response was so strong I wanted to expand on this a bit more.
When I began twenty-eight years ago, I thought the only place you could possibly go for quality acting training was New York or Los Angeles (and that was probably true twenty-eight years ago).
However, I recently interviewed a student who was studying in Vancouver with a woman whose name I’ve forgotten but my goodness it was clear she was very talented, very gifted, and very humble. She had all the qualities and characteristics you’re looking for in an acting teacher.
The point is there are wonderful teachers out there, but you have to work to find them.
And I know what we’re doing here in San Francisco; we’re certainly not Los Angeles or New York yet our graduates leave here and are able and ready to compete against anyone.
There are teachers all around the world that are gifted and truly know what they’re doing. They’re not just frustrated actors trying to pay the rent teaching some things they’ve learned along the way. They’re actually dedicated to elevating the profession.
So what I want to say is, you don’t have to move to a major market to get quality training. It exists in smaller markets but you’re going to have to do some research to find them. Go on the Internet or reach out to us and I’d be happy to help in any way to recommend somebody.
On the heels of last week’s blog I want to make this very clear: You can receive world class training throughout the world. Think about where you’d like to live as you put the foundation of your craft into place and then do the research to see if there is someone that is the right fit for you.
So many people show up in Los Angeles with no foundation. Everybody back home tells them that they’re really pretty and cool and they’re going to be big stars some day. So they show up and of course there’s an acting teacher on every corner in Los Angeles so they take class after class trying to find a legitimate teacher.
I recommend before making that move to Hollywood, you consider that you don’t have to start there. Instead move to an area that excites you and that has somebody there dedicated to truly helping actors, to help you have your best shot at this profession.
Think about that and let me know your thoughts. Also, share with us some of your teachers out there that you know about in other markets and we can share that with others as well.
All right, we’ll talk next week. I look forward to it!
