How do you prepare for a role that is not even close to your experiences in life?

Hi everyone,
Today’s blog topic is this: how do you prepare for a role that is not even close to your experiences in life?
There are certain roles that, when you read the script, it will resonate and there’s so much that you’ll connect to. And when we start assigning scenes as our students go through the training, we rarely assign scenes because a student is ‘right’ for it. We do it to stretch them, to challenge them in areas that we want them to grow. That’s the criteria in many cases, so that our students can apply the teachings and information to bridge that gap between what comes natural for them and what isn’t natural at all.
The answer is craft. How do you prepare for a role that is not close to your life experience? Craft. Training. Hollywood will rarely let you do that, they love to cast based on type. If they need a redheaded three-eyed guy they’ll find one, trust me.
