How to Take a Great Headshot, Part 4 of 5
Hi everyone,
Here we go, Part 4. So this is now more do’s and don’ts. Okay? So ladies, no jewelry. Don’t wear big, gaudy earrings. You don’t want any earrings, honestly. You don’t want those nice diamond studs you have or whatever. You don’t want any jewelry on at all.
Why? Why do you think?
It pulls focus. You want their eye to go straight to your eye, to your presence, to your essence, to what you’re exuding. You don’t want them to be distracted.
I often get asked, “What clothes, what colors do I wear?” You want to bring a bunch of options when you go to a session and test them. See what looks better. See what you like better.
But the bottom line is, you don’t want stripes, you don’t want whites (that washes out.) You want something solid, but you really want to wear something that makes you feel great.
That’s one of my best pieces of advice. Wear that shirt, that blouse, that top that you love. And even though they won’t see it below, wear those $300 jeans. You want to feel terrific, so wear what makes you feel terrific, but bring a change of clothes.
Makeup: ladies, you guys are used to putting makeup on all the time. There’s a difference, especially for shooting on HD shots. The photographer will typically have their own makeup person.
But I’ll tell you this – I see this all the time – because you’re spending a lot of money, you feel like the more makeup they put on, the better. But the reality is, it’s not how you really look. If you’re not comfortable with the look that they just put all over you, it’s up to you to say, “That’s too much makeup for me. That’s not how I look.”
Because whatever they shoot is what’s going out, and that means you have to show up looking like that. And if you’re not capable of that look, or don’t like that look, that’s on you.
So you’ve got to speak up. You need makeup. We all do for this kind of lighting. Although I don’t have anything on right now. I’m sure I could use it, but there you go. And guys, it’s less, certainly. They’re just going to put a nice base, a little powder, and that’s about it.
We are much lower maintenance with that, but it’s good to have some on too because these HD cameras – the way they capture images is just so clean, clear, intense that it does really does capture any imperfection. And we’ve got plenty of those.
Airbrush: after you get your shots done, you might’ve had a pimple that day, or if there’s just some feature that you don’t like in the shot. Just be careful. If you have a mole, you’re not going to airbrush it out, because guess what? You’re showing up with a mole, so I’m not talking about that.
But sometimes people go crazy with the airbrushing, so don’t do that. They can see it right away. You’ll look like some supermodel glam thing, but it ain’t you. They want to meet you.
Okay, there are some basics. There’s more, but that’s a start. Good luck!
